DoubleElimination Bracket

How Double Elimination Brackets Work: Seeding, Byes & Math

A complete breakdown of the mathematics and scheduling rules behind double elimination tournaments.

The Exact Game Count Formula: 2N − 2 and 2N − 1

Every match played in a tournament produces exactly one loss. For N participating teams to crown a single champion in a double elimination format, N − 1 teams must accumulate 2 losses each, which accounts for 2(N − 1) = 2N − 2 losses.

If the undefeated Winners Bracket champion wins the first Grand Final match, the champion finishes with 0 losses and the tournament concludes in 2N − 2 games. If the Losers Bracket champion wins Game 1, the Winners Bracket champion suffers their first loss, requiring one final deciding game (2N − 1 total).

Handling Non-Power-of-Two Team Counts (Byes)

When N is not a power of two (such as 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, or 14 teams), calculate the next power of two P = 2^ceil(log2(N)). The number of first-round byes is B = P − N, awarded to the top B seeds.
